Nayaab Health Project: Zenana Health Clinic, Lahore

Zenana communities are often marginalized. This marginalization translates into the daily lives of many zenana individuals, leading to a negative perception of themselves. A negative self image results in a poor attitude towards health. The Nayaab Health Project provides zenanas in Lahore a safe space where they can meet and discuss their daily challenges, and begin to see themselves in a more positive light.

The Nayaab Health Project gives participants access to free medical services twice a week, free medications such as analgesics and antibiotics, and access to free legal services.

Paticipants can take part in other activities such as group trips to resorts, and arts and crafts sessions.

Vision aims to encourage a positive attitude among the participants so that they take care of their health and well-being. To this end, the project has become successfully self-sustained. All books and records are kept by the participants, who also brainstorm ideas to generate funding from within their own community to keep the project running.

Currently, Vision oversees key elements of the project, but our ultimate goal is to create a completely independant organization run by zenanas in Lahore, whereby they determine how best to face their different challenges, and what changes they would like to bring in their communities. In other words, they define their needs, and they work out the solutions.

Haath Mein Haath: Children's shelter, Lahore

In 2004, Vision started a children's shelter project in Lahore to combat challenges faced by children living on the streets. Haath Mein haath began as a drop-in center where children could come in, receive healthy meals, and play or simply relax in a safe environment. Initially popular amongst children as a safe place to hang out, Haath mein Haath was expanded to include a night shelter in Summer 2005, following requests by a large number of the children then participating in the project.

The Haath mein Haath project is currently serving 12 children on average, though the numbers may vary on a daily basis.

The project is currently being run thanks to funding by Group Development, a French donor agency. However, Vision is looking for sustainable sources of funding at the regional level. Although cash contributions are great, we understand that many people like donating in kind. We welcome donatins in the form of clothing, books, toys and food.
